A fire starter works when the matches are already wet and lighter gas will not come out in the cold. A magnesium rod with a steel striker throws sparks of several thousand degrees and works straight out of the water.
The range holds an M-Tac tactical starter, Texar Camp and magnesium starters and a Tac Maven magnesium rod.
Scrape a small pile of shavings off the magnesium rod onto dry tinder, then draw the steel striker down the rod so the sparks fall straight into the shavings. Pull towards yourself and hold the striker still.
It depends on the rod thickness, but the usual figure is thousands of strikes – one starter lasts far longer than a box of matches or a lighter.
